Munay Tika Advances

* Munay T’ika School It is the first school for children in Peru that is dedicated to the recovery and valuing of customs and ancestral native ceremonies, including music, dances, clothing, art and philosophy
* It is the only school located in the heart of a living ancestral culture as is the community of Q'ero
* In the first year (2000) we were able to call the attention and desires of 34 children (one classroom with children between 4 to 13 years old) who had never attended school before. These children came frequently from August to December in 2000.
* During our second year (2001) 54 children attended regularly, (our capacity was for 25 most children had to do their classes using the floor or windows as chair or tables)

* Now the school year runs from April to December with 70 children regularly attending and the classrooms are being gradually upgraded with wooden floors and roof lights integrated into the thatch roof to improve light.

Munay T'ika School-Students

* In only the first 4 months (2000) we were able to develop and conclude our educational program based on primary school lessons. The children ended the session knowing the 5 vowels and the consonants M and P and the numbers from 1 to 10; nearly all the students are ready for the next level.
* During the season of 2001 we conclude a regular educational program for first and second grade.
* We began our program of School weavings, Parents and children worked and finished traditional weavings.

* Now there is an integrated program for Kindergarden and each of the 6 grades where the children are taught in Quechua and Castellano at the same time

* A Parent's Association was established with the responsibility of working in coordination with the Muju Project and with the Teachers from 2000 to esure the school is sustainable and continues to meet the needs of the community.
* A program for Adult literacy was developed with 17 students and a School for Parents was organized with the attendance of a good number of participants. Here we dealt with topics such as Family Planning, Alcoholism, the growth and education of Children, Self-esteem and First Aid.
* We carry out family workshops where parents as well as children participate, and we are able to develop skills with craft materials, among the items made were 33 little llamas made with local materials and decorated with real llama and alpaca wool.
* One important aspect of the work is the recovery and revaluation of many cultural aspects of Q'ero people. Some of these had nearly died out and have now been recovered as part of the valuable heritage and now, for example, we are able to carry out a Q'ero ceremony called Llama Chiquillay, which was perfectly performed by the children, parents and participants in the adult reading program of the school.

* Even with the tight budget that we have we were able to take some medicines to the community for use in first aid, this allowed us to cure a number of people, not just the students of the school but also some parents and members of the general population. It is important to mention that we saved the lives of three people. (2000)
* During the years of 2001-2002-2003 the School has been helping to Qero children with Educational and Recreative materials, Our School had 75 children attending regualarly
* For year 2003 we had 2 teachers working permanently and they taught from first grade to forth grade.
* With our ongoing work, children from the whole community of Q’ero have showed a incredible desire to attend the school, the Annexes (towns) of Ccochamocco, Challmachimpana, Choa Choa, Hatum Rumioc are awaiting Schools (this means around 300 children who do not currently have any chance to get any kind of education)

* During 2004 Munay T'ika School opened 2 new educational grades: Kindergarten and Fifth Grade in addition to the other grades and this was welcomed by all parents; We were also able to get the official recognition of our School, so we are now an Official Peruvian School.

* During our School Closing Ceremony in last December 2004, almost 400 Q'ero people came together, and what really amazing is that almost all of them attended with traditional Q'ero clothing,, which means that our work is really helping Q'ero people to see and feel their culture with a lot of love

* This year the School Closing Ceremony in December will be another important event for the whole community.
